Olivia’s best bread
In part one of this blog our intern, Olivia Eliadis, tasted four popular breads and compared many factors to determine her best bread. Thank you, Olivia for your work on this blog and corresponding social posts.
And the winner is…
My favorite bread was the Sara Lee Delightful White with whole grain keto friendly bread. It was the cheapest, very low in calories and carbs, and contained fiber. It is also made with whole wheat flour unlike the 647 bread. I think it had a very basic taste and soft texture, making it perfect for a lunchtime sandwich.
My next favorite was the Old Tyme 647 bread. This bread is higher in fiber than the Delightful bread but does not have whole wheat flour as the first ingredient (see comparison chart below). If you want to increase fiber this bread is the perfect choice!
I will say I was disappointed with my third choice, Dave’s Killer Bread - 21 Whole Grains and Seeds. I love seed and grain breads, but this bread was very dry and hard. I inspected other loaves but they all felt the same. The taste was nothing extraordinary, it was slightly sweet but the texture ruined it for me. Toasting this bread could possibly improve it but I don’t think this price is worth it. I will compliment its ingredient list and its nutritional value. It has omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, protein, and is very high in whole grains.
My least favorite was the Sara Lee 100% whole wheat bread. The flavor was bland and left a weird aftertaste and the texture was dry and slightly dense. It is also low in fiber and the ingredients could be better. It does have whole grain flour, but I wouldn't reach for this bread again.
