FAQs about Medicare coverage

  • Medicare will only cover nutrition counseling (Medical Nutrition Therapy) for those with a diagnosis of chronic kidney disease (stages 3-4) or diabetes (this does NOT include prediabetes). All other concerns may possibly be covered by a secondary insurance. The out of pocket cost for an initial 75 minute visit is $210.

  • Your secondary insurance (a plan that you or your spouse have through a former employer) may cover your visit, even if you do not have a diagnosis of chronic kidney disease (stages 3-4) or diabetes. Please note a secondary insurance plan is different than a supplemental plan.

  • Supplemental plans (these are Medicare plans offered by another insurance company) will NOT cover nutrition counseling (Medical Nutrition Therapy) unless you have a diagnosis of chronic kidney disease (stages 3-4) or diabetes (this does NOT include prediabetes).

  • Call our office or fill out the Appointment Request form in the section above so we can guide you. Ultimately it is your responsibility to determine what your particular plan (or plans) covers. If you are uncertain whether or not you have coverage please contact your insurance company/companies for confirmation of your coverage.

Feel free to give us a call if you have further questions (240-448-6181).

  • Medicare requires a referral from a Medical Doctor (MD or a DO). If you see a Nurse Practitioner or Physician’s Assistant they will need to have a Medical Doctor in the practice sign the referral. Referrals can be faxed directly to our office at 240-270-1392. Once we receive your referral we will schedule your appointment.
