Anybody want a snack?

Who’s ready to hit the road? Spring is here and after two years of pandemic living, lots of people are adding more events, getaways, and vacations to their calendars. Whether you’re heading to your kid’s baseball tournament or a spa weekend (take me, take me!), slow your roll and grab some healthy snack options before you go.

What makes a healthy snack? Considering that the term “healthy” is sometimes used in questionable ways, I’ll tell you how I define a healthy snack. A healthy snack is all about the dream team – protein and carbohydrate together.

DIY

Choose a protein option – hardboiled egg, nuts, cheese, seeds, lunch meat, nut butter, jerky, cottage cheese AND

Choose a carbohydrate option – fruit, whole grain crackers, whole wheat bread, popcorn

What does this look like in your cooler bag?

  • 2 clementines and a ¼ cup of nuts

  • Single serve bag low fat popcorn and a string cheese

  • A serving of wheat thins and peanut butter

If you need something even quicker so you can literally grab and go, it’s fine to use packaged options that have both protein and carbohydrate. A protein bar like Rx bar or Nature Valley protein granola bar, a Greek yogurt, and Sargento Balanced Breaks are all nice picks. These are also typically available at convenience stores, in case of emergency!

Safe (and healthy) travels to you!
