A dietitian’s view on weight loss goals

Let me climb atop my soapbox for a moment, as I prepare to share my views on working with clients who have weight loss as a goal. To me, the role of a dietitian is to serve as a nutrition expert, guiding the public regarding food choices that are in line with their personal goals.

It is not my role to tell someone that they "need to" or "should" lose weight. When a client comes to me for help with a health goal, I believe it is my responsibility to share my expertise with them and include any evidence-based recommendations that may improve their health condition. At times, I am offering a suggestion of weight loss as ONE approach that may help their health condition (for example, losing 5%-10% of your weight can reduce hemoglobin A1c for people with diabetes).

My clients set their own goals during our sessions, with my encouragement and support. If weight loss is NOT a focus for them, that's okay. And if weight loss IS a focus for them, that's okay, too (provided the client isn't dealing with disordered eating or body dysmorphia). When I plan a diet with my clients, the word diet means "the foods you commonly eat". The meal plans we create in session have representation from every food group, there are no forbidden foods. They are balanced, realistic, and sustainable.

I chose a profession that allows me to work closely with individuals of all sizes to achieve their health goals. My sessions are a judgment-free zone and a safe space. I will work my hardest to help you to feel your best and to reach your goals.
